The last couple of weeks have seen us studying Literacy further. We are getting down to the more practical aspects of literacy work, such as how to decide on an orthography (writing system) for a language that hasn’t been written down before (an important foundation to literacy work!) and how to plan and produce ‘primers’-basic instructional books for teaching people to read and write. Today we were thinking about encouraging writers’ workshops so that local story-tellers can create books in their own language. This is exciting stuff for us ‘details’ people, like me (Liz), after discussing the broad concepts of literacy!
We have been asked for a ‘day in the life of the Wisbeys’ video diary…don’t think we can quite stretch to that (yet!) but will try to give you some idea what the average day looks like here. Every day is so varied so I may struggle, but here goes!
We arise at 7am and get ready for breakfast at 7.40ish in Bede, the site ‘restaurant’/dining hall! We try to not just grunt at people while we eat ‘continental’ breakfast. 8.30am is ‘Tuning In’ – this is not to do with sound checks for the electrical equipment, as I first thought, but a 10 minute devotional time led by students and teachers. At 8.40ish we start ‘Track’, which for us is Literacy (not an Olympic sport!). There are 7 of us and we have lots of discussions. 10.30am and 3.30pm is coffee break with homemade cookies – a very important part of Wycliffe UK’s day, it seems. ‘Track’ usually finishes at 12pm when we have fellowship groups on a Monday, Centre Fellowship on a Tuesday, Chapel on a Thursday. Lunch is at 12.45ish and is very filling! The afternoon will consist of us doing other classes – Language and Society, Anthropology or Teamwork and then ‘hanging out’ in the library till we’ve done all our reading and assignments. Tea is at 6pm and is almost as filling as lunch but not quite! Evenings encompass aerobics, football (or did when it was light!), watching videos, pub visits – all after the work is done, of course! We go to bed at 10.30ish very tired!
We shall see about that video diary when we are foreign soil!

So, does that mean you will be creating an alphabet and developing the correlation between symbols and sounds for a language? Sounds impressive!
Ah, lovely to hear how you're getting on - this blog business does make sense! I do keep wondering how you're getting on - nice to be able to check so easily! Glad to hear that it all seems to be going well. I can't believe how quickly the last 2 months have gone, you'll be away before any of us know it! Hope you're excited!
