What exactly is ‘Mother-tongue based multilingual education’ (MTB-MLE)?
Ever pondered on that question? No? Ok, even if not you may be interested to get some idea of the kind of things I’ve been looking into over the last 4 weeks. The image (wordle) below was compiled from the words my coursemates came up with last week when thinking about multilingual education. CALP? What's that? I see that literacy involves using complicated words or very long strings of words so that everyone feels illiterate!
CALP stands for 'Cognitive Academic Language Proficiency', the level of language thought to be needed when learning another language. In opposed to BICS which is 'Basic Interpersonal Communicative Skills', the level of language skills needed to interact socially etc. These are pedagogical concepts which are rather topic specific... :-)
